Peru - Tarapoto GYTS Summary
Basic Information and Methodology
- Survey: Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in Peru, Tarapoto, involving students aged 13-15.
- Duration: 2003.
- Sample Design: Two-stage cluster sampling, selecting schools and classes. School response rate 100%, class response rate 100%, student response rate 92.1%, total participants 1,126 students.
Key Findings
- Cigarette吸烟 prevalence: 48.7% had ever smoked, with higher rates in boys (56.1%) and lower in girls (40.8%). 15.5% currently smoke, and 18.8% use any tobacco product.
- Other tobacco use: 6.4% use other products.
- Smoking initiation: 19.6% of never smokers are likely to start smoking next year.
- Cessation: 77.6% want to stop, 80.5% tried to quit in the past year, 75.2% received help to stop.
Exposure and Attitudes

Secondhand smoke (SHS): 27.2% live in homes with smoking others; importants SHS exposure in public places. 88.7% support banning smoking in public areas.

Parent and peer smoking: 42.3% have parents who smoke, 10.3% have friends who smoke.

Media and advertising: 91.8% saw anti-smoking ads, but 74.4% and 78.4% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards and in media, respectively. 8.9% offered free cigarettes.

Education and attitudes: Most students received classroom education on smoking dangers, with 64.9% taught about it, and 55.3% and 50.4% discussed reasons and effects.

Peer perception: Higher acceptance among some students regarding smoking aesthetics and accessibility.
