Mauritius-Rodrigues GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)

Methodology

The survey was conducted in 2003 using a two-stage cluster sample design. Response rates included: school response rate 100%, class response rate 100%, student response rate 87%, and an overall response rate of 87%. A total of 646 students from Forms II-IV and grades 1-5 participated.

Key Findings

Prevalence: 52.3% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (males: 60.5%, females: 45.8%), and 17.6% were current smokers (males: 23.3%, females: 13.2%). An additional 10.9% of never smokers were likely to initiate smoking in the next year.
SHS Exposure: 42.5% lived in homes where others smoked, 64.8% were exposed elsewhere, and 83.8% believed smoking should be banned in public places.
Attitudes: High support for bans and awareness hazards; 72.7% had seen anti-smoking media in the past 30 days.
Access and Availability: 22.1% smoked at home, 30.3% bought cigarettes from stores; 8.9% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco companies.
Cessation and Quitting: 62.2% of current smokers wanted to quit, with 70.6% having attempted to stop in the past year and 74.5% seeking help.
School and Media: Most students were taught about smoking dangers and effects; pro-cigarette ads were less common than anti-smoking messages.
Other Determinants: Students showed high levels of exposure to smoking peers and attitudes favoring tobacco control, along with gaps in cessation support and media influence.
