Survey Design and Sample

• Implemented a two-stage cluster sample design with response rates of 87.5% at school, 100.0% at class, 91.4% at student, and 80.0% overall.
• Surveyed 1,328 students aged 13-15 in grades 7, 8, and 9 using a school-based approach conducted in 2003.

Prevalence of Tobacco Use

• 26.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (males: 25.0%, females: 26.9%).
• 20.1% currently use any tobacco product (males: 20.5%, females: 19.4%).
• 12.4% currently smoke cigarettes (males: 11.6%, females: 12.8%).
• 10.3% currently use other tobacco products (males: 12.6%, females: 8.3%).
• 16.1% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)

• 38.6% live in homes where others smoke in their presence.
• 56.2% are exposed to smoke in places outside their home.
• 84.7% believe smoking should be banned from public places.
• 62.6% think SHS is harmful to them.

Cessation and Current Smokers

• 62.1% want to stop smoking.
• 63.5% tried to stop smoking in the past year.
• 77.5% received help to stop smoking in the past year.

Media and Advertising

• 84.9% were exposed to anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
• 90.9% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards in the past 30 days.
• 90.3% saw pro-cigarette ads in newspapers or magazines in the past 30 days.
• 16.8% have items with cigarette brand logos.

School-Related Factors

• 73.0% learned about smoking dangers in classes during the past year.
• 66.0% learned about effects of tobacco use.
• 45.2% discussed reasons for smoking among peers.
