Global Youth Tobacco Survey - Azerbaijan 2011 Summary

• Survey Overview: A school-based survey conducted in 2011 among grades 8-10 students (ages 13-15). A total of 2,047 students participated (73.2% response rate).

• Tobacco Prevalence:

  • Ever smoked cigarettes: 10.6% (Boys=16.5%, Girls=4.8%)
  • Current use of any tobacco product: 6.8% (Boys=11.4%, Girls=2.1%)
  • Current daily manufactured cigarette smoker: 1.8% boys, 0.4% girls.
  • Ever smokers initiated smoking before age ten: 36.6% (Boys=34.0%).
  • 8.7% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking within the next year (Boys=10.1%, Girls=7.5%).

• Determinants:

  • Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS) & Attitudes:
    • Exposure:
      • Live in home where others smoke: 27.1%
      • ETV others smoke at home/nearby: 17.7%
      • ETV others smoke in enclosed public places: 27.3%
    • 94.0% believe smoking should be banned from public places.
    • 85.9% believe smoke from others is harmful.
  • Access and Availability:
    • 59.1% of current smokers buy cigarettes in stores.
    • 40.5% have one or more parents who smoke.
    • 12.2% were offered free cigarettes by a tobacco company representative.
    • 10.7% have objects with cigarette brand logos.
    • 4.2% have most/all friends smoking.
  • Cessation:
    • Current smokers who want to stop: 61.8%.
    • Ever received help to stop: 44.3%.
    • 13.6% smoke first thing in the morning.
  • Media and Advertising:
    • Most saw anti-smoking media (TV 72.3%, Billboards 57.9%, Newspapers/Mags 50.0%) compared to pro-cigarette messages.
  • School:
    • Majority (65.5%) taught about smoking dangers, 60.7% taught effects of tobacco, 29.0% discussed smoking reasons.
