Cambodia 2010 Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary (Ages 13-15)
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Cambodia for ages 13-15 was conducted in 2010 using a two-stage cluster sample design. It involved 4,556 students, with 1,637 aged 13-15, achieving a 92.7% response rate. The survey assessed tobacco use prevalence, determinants, and exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), media, and school-based factors.
Key findings on tobacco use:
- 1.6% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (higher among boys at 3.0% vs. 0.6% girls).
- 6.3% currently used any tobacco product (7.9% boys, 5.0% girls).
- 0.2% currently smoked cigarettes (0.4% boys, 0.0% girls).
- 6.2% used other tobacco products (7.6% boys, 5.0% girls) besides cigarettes.
Knowledge and attitudes:
- Awareness of SHS risks was high, with 69.2% believing smoking should be banned in public places and 69.8% knowing smoke from others is harmful.
- Media exposure: 82.3% saw anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days, while 61.2% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards and 44.8% in newspapers/magazines. School-based education covered smoking dangers in 30.4% of cases during the past year.
SHS exposure and determinants:
- 31.5% lived in homes where others smoked, and 43.0% were exposed to smoke outside home.
- 27.1% had items with cigarette brand logos, and 4.9% were offered free cigarettes.
School factors:
- 30.4% discussed smoking reasons in class, and 45.2% learned about tobacco effects.
- Overall, 91.6% saw anti-smoking media ads.
Eight in ten students supported smoking bans in public places due to harmful effects. This highlights areas for comprehensive tobacco control programs.
