Peru-Trujillo GYTS Summary (2007)
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Peru-Trujillo (ages 13-15) is a school-based study conducted in 2007 using a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates (school: 96.0%, class: 96.7%, student: 86.6%, overall: 80.4%). It involved about 1,857 students and assessed tobacco use prevalence and determinants.
Key findings include:
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 41.0% (males 48.8%, females 33.1%).
- Current tobacco product use: 16.7% (males 19.3%, females 14.1%).
- Current cigarette smoking: 14.4% (males 17.4%, females 11.5%).
- Other tobacco product use: 2.9% (males 4.4%, females 1.4%).
- Smoking initiation likelihood: 23.9% of never smokers intend to start smoking.
Attitudes towards smoking: 17.8% of students believe smoking increases social ties, while 60.9% access cigarettes easily, and 86% want to stop. Environmental tobacco smoke exposure is high (18.3% live in smoking homes, 43.9% exposed outside). Over 80% believe secondhand smoke is harmful, and 90% support public smoking bans.
Media and advertising: 78.7% saw anti-smoking messages, but 68.1% saw pro-cigarette billboards, and similar exposure in newspapers. Half received school-based smoking education.
