TAG-VE Summary

Purpose

The Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) was established in 2020 as an independent expert body for WHO to inform global COVID-19 prevention and control strategies. Composition

Up to 30 members serve in their personal capacities, representing diverse expertise in fields like virology, epidemiology, and pharmacology. Members are appointed for one year by WHO, with reappointment possibilities, emphasizing gender and geographical balance. They must avoid conflicts of interest and complete declarations.

Operation

The TAG-VE meets at least twice monthly, using virtual or in-person formats. Meetings can be open (allowing observer participation) or closed (for deliberative sessions). Decisions are made by consensus, and recommendations are advisory to WHO. WHO provides administrative and scientific support.

Additional Details

WHO manages the secretariat, handles confidentiality, and controls publication of reports. Members do not receive remuneration but may have travel expenses covered for in-person meetings. Compliance with rules is strict to ensure independence.
