As per the WHO External Situation Report 5 on monkeypox published on 7 September 2022, the outbreak has seen a decrease in cases globally due to reporting from the 24-28 August week, with a 25.5% drop to 5,029 cases compared to the previous week. The majority of cases are in the Americas (70.7%) and European Region (28.3%) of WHO, with the European Region experiencing the largest decline. The risk assessment indicates moderate global risk, high in Europe, and moderate elsewhere, with no deaths reported from the African Region. Cases are primarily reported in young men, with high transmission through sexual contacts, and WHO is actively supporting surveillance, vaccination, and community engagement, while addressing stigma and updating guidelines.

From 1 January to 4 September 2022, 52,996 laboratory-confirmed cases and 18 deaths were reported from 102 countries, with six new countries included and some reporting their first cases. The U.S., Spain, and Brazil are topping the case counts.

WHO's response includes regular data collection via IHR communications and case forms, with specific guidance on surveillance, clinical management, and risk communication. Resources focus on providing inclusive public advice and managing gatherings, alongside coordinating with regional offices.
