Thailand Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary (Ages 13-15)

The Thailand GYTS, conducted in 2009, was a school-based survey examining tobacco use and its determinants among students aged 13-15. A total of 7,649 students participated, with high response rates.

Key Findings:

Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 25.8% had ever smoked cigarettes (40.3% boys, 12.1% girls).
- 17.9% currently used any tobacco product (26.9% boys, 9.2% girls).
- 11.7% smoked cigarettes currently.
- 10.8% used other tobacco products.
- 8.6% of never smokers were likely to initiate smoking.
Exposure and Access:
- 45.7% lived with others who smoked; 67.6% were exposed to smoking outside the home.
- 75.5% smoked at home; nearly half purchased cigarettes without age refusal.
- 59.6% believed secondhand smoke is harmful, and 83.4% supported public smoking bans.
Attitudes and Knowledge:
- Most students (89.5%) were exposed to anti-smoking media, but 31.0% saw pro-tobacco ads.
- Three-quarters of current smokers wanted to quit, and 86.9% had received help.
School Factors:
- Classes addressed tobacco dangers (60.5%) and reasons for smoking (27.1% discussion with peers).
