Defence Equity Facility Launch by European Commission and European Investment Fund
The European Commission and the European Investment Fund (EIF) have partnered to launch the Defence Equity Facility (DEF), aimed at boosting investment in defence innovation through private equity and venture capital funds. The initiative is funded by €100 million from the European Defence Fund and an additional €75 million from EIF, totaling €175 million over four years. This facility focuses on dual-use technologies, supporting the development of a defence innovation ecosystem and enhancing EU security.
The DEF is expected to attract significant private investments, mobilizing approximately €500 million in total. It includes capacity-building activities for fund managers and aligns with the InvestEU programme and the European Council's objectives for strengthening European security and defence. Previously, the collaboration was established through the CASSINI Fund for space investments.
Commissioner Thierry Breton emphasized that DEF improves access to finance for the defence sector, fostering innovation and security. Deputy Chief Executive Roger Havenith highlighted the role in driving investment and economic growth. European Investment Bank Vice-President Kris Peeters noted its contribution to EU defence capabilities and technological competitiveness.
