Bulgarian Youth Tobacco Survey 2015 Summary
Introduction
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a standardized monitoring tool for youth tobacco use, conducted in Bulgaria in 2015 by the National Center of Public Health and Analyses, with an 86.0% response rate. It focuses on students aged 13-15 years, providing data on smoking, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes, cessation, secondhand smoke exposure, media influence, and attitudes.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Use: 28.8% of students (27.4% boys, 30.1% girls) used any tobacco products. Specifically, 20.4% smoked cigarettes (17.2% boys, 23.7% girls), and 2.6% used smokeless tobacco (3.4% boys, 1.5% girls).
- Electronic Cigarettes: 10.8% of students used e-cigarettes in the past 12 months (12.2% boys, 9.2% girls).
- Cessation: 50.8% of students wanted to stop smoking, and among current cigarette smokers, 61.9% attempted to quit within the last 12 months.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: 50.8% were exposed at home, and 50.6% were exposed in enclosed public places.
- Media and Media Influence: 63.2% noticed tobacco advertisements or promotions at points of sale, while 50.0% saw anti-tobacco messages in media, and 83.6% were influenced by seeing tobacco use in entertainment.
- Attitudes: 76.2% favored prohibiting smoking in enclosed public places, and 57.1% definitely thought tobacco smoking is harmful. Additionally, 32.8% currently smoked tobacco to feel more comfortable at social gatherings, but that percentage is lower than overall smoking rates.
Methodology and Context
The survey uses a two-stage sampling design, anonymous self-administered questionnaires, and data from 4,042 students (86.0% response). Data were weighted for national representativeness. WHO's FCTC guidelines are applied, highlighting high youth tobacco use and strong support for tobacco control policies.
