Summary of GYTS Thailand 2015 Survey
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), part of the WHO Global Tobacco Surveillance System, monitors youth tobacco use in Thailand for 2015. This survey used a standardized method to track key indicators under the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
Key findings:
- Tobacco use: 15.0% of youth aged 13-15 used any tobacco products, with higher rates among boys (21.8%) than girls (8.1%). Specifically, 11.3% smoked cigarettes, mostly boys (17.2%), and 6.3% used other tobacco forms.
- Electronic cigarette use: 3.3% of students used ECs, with boys more likely to use them (4.7%).
- Cessation: 80% of current smokers tried to quit in the past 12 months, and 72-81% believed they could stop if motivated.
- Secondhand smoke exposure: 33.8% were exposed at home, and 38.6% in enclosed public places, with significant gender differences.
- Media exposure: 74.9% noticed anti-tobacco messages in media, while 77.4% saw tobacco promotions; most youth (77.6%) thought tobacco smoking is harmful.
- Availability: 67.4% of current cigarette smokers purchased them from stores or stalls, often without prevention.
- Attitudes: Over half were susceptible to tobacco use due to social influence, but most held negative views and acknowledged media risks.
The survey, conducted with a high response rate by Thailand authorities, provides comparable data for tobacco control efforts.
