Analysis of ESG Emphasis in Leading Companies in East Asia and Southeast Asia
This study analyzed 480 corporate reports from 293 leading companies across eight countries—China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand—using advanced natural language processing and Deep Learning techniques to identify ESG reporting patterns.
Key Findings
- Dominant Topics: Economics and governance risk were the most frequently mentioned ESG-related topics across the region.
- Regional Variations: The study identified significant variations in ESG emphasis between countries.
- Korea showed the strongest focus on environmental and social topics (80% of its reports emphasized ESG).
- China prioritized economic topics and governance risk.
- Japan maintained a balanced approach with strong emphasis on domestic job creation and work environment.
- Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines mostly emphasized community-related issues like human rights.
- AI Model Performance: The Text Match Pre-trained Transformer (TMPT) model, used to measure topic relevance, demonstrated high accuracy across multiple languages but performed better in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean due to greater data richness.
- Corporate Focus: Companies clustered into two groups: those emphasizing environmental/social topics (often linked to stakeholder focus or global strategy) and those emphasizing economic/governance topics (often linked to profitability and risk).
Data Analysis Methodology
The TMPT model processed reports by breaking them into text fragments and measuring relevance to predefined ESG topics. Approximately 26.6% of reports were classified as "ESG-Emp Hasized."
Limitations
The study focused on large-cap companies, used a specific AI model, and faced challenges related to multilingual data richness and model performance in underrepresented languages, acknowledged as areas for future research.
