Syria GSHS 2010 Summary

Introduction

The 2010 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Syria evaluated health behaviors among students aged 13-15 years in grades 7-10 using a two-stage cluster sampling design. Total participants: 3102. Response rates: 100% school and 97% student overall. Measured behaviors included alcohol use, dietary habits, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, tobacco use, and violence/unintentional injury.

Key Findings

Alcohol Use

Total: 7.4% consumed alcohol in the past 30 days (95% CI: 5.4-10.1).
Boys: 11.5% (95% CI: 8.5-15.4); Girls: 3.1% (95% CI: 2.1-4.5).
Among ever-drinkers, 87.6% (95% CI: 81.3-92.0) started before age 14. Boys: 88.6% (95% CI: 81.8-93.0); Girls: Not specified as few had first drink before 14, but overall high uptake.

Dietary Behaviors

Malnutrition Indicators:
- Underweight (< -2SD BMI-for-age/sex): 4.7% (total), boys 4.5%, girls 4.9%.
- Overweight (> +1SD BMI-for-age/sex): 21.7% (total), boys 25.6%, girls 17.5%.
- Obese (> +2SD BMI-for-age/sex): 5.8% (total), boys 8.1%, girls 3.3%.
Carbonated soft drink consumption ≥1/day: 30.8% overall, boys 34.4%, girls 26.9%.

Hygiene

Tooth cleaning <1/day: 33.5% average, boys 37.4%, girls 29.4%.
Hand washing never/rarely after toilet: 3.8% average, boys 4.2%, girls 3.3%.

Mental Health

No close friends: 5.2% overall, boys 4.7%, girls 5.6% (95% CI provided for each).

Physical Activity

≥60 min/day, 5+ days/week: 15.1% average, boys 19.1%, girls 10.8% (95% CI).
PE class ≥3 days/week: 25.0% average, boys 29.0%, girls 20.7%.
Sitting activities ≥3 hours/day: 25.6% overall, boys 24.2%, girls 27.1%.

Protective Factors

Missed classes without permission: 34.0% average, boys 33.8%, girls 34.3%.
Parents/guardians understanding problems: 26.7% on average, boys 25.0%, girls 28.6%.
Parents/guardians monitoring free time: 38.0% average, boys 34.2%, girls 42.0%.

Tobacco Use

Cigarette smoking ≥1 day/year: 10.6% overall, boys 16.2%, girls 4.8% (95% CI).
Ever smoked, started before 14: 84.6% (95% CI: 80.7-87.9) among smokers; Boys: 88.1%, Girls: 75.1%.
Exposure to smoking: 62.9% reported presence 1+ days last week (95% CI).
