Survey Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Djibouti targeted students aged 13-15 in grades 3ème, 4ème, and 5ème, conducted in 2003. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates (class and student response rates at 100% and 92.5%, respectively). A total of 1,580 students participated, measuring tobacco use prevalence and determinants such as access, price, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), media, and school-based factors.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 12.5% (higher among boys, 16.7% vs. 6.8%).
- Current users of tobacco products: 14.9% (boys higher, 17.9%; girls 10.7%).
- Current cigarette smokers: 6.1% (boys higher, 8.6%; girls 2.6%).
- Current users of other tobacco products: 11.1% (boys higher, 12.3%; girls 9.6%).
Determinants of Tobacco Use
Data assessed key factors for a tobacco control program:

- 45.1% bought cigarettes from stores, rarely refused due to age.
- Media advertising: 73.7% saw anti-smoking messages; 73.4% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads and 66.4% in print media in the past 30 days.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 39.5% lived in homes where others smoked.
- 43.2% were exposed outside the home.
- 72.1% believed smoking should be banned in public places.

Attitudes and Social Norms:
- 35.7% thought smoking increases popularity.
- 10.9% had friends who smoked.
- 75.6% wanted to stop smoking.
- 65.1% attempted to quit in the past year.
- 42.9% perceived SHS as harmful.

School and Education Factors:
- 44.1% received classroom education on smoking dangers.
- 30.9% discussed anti-smoking reasons in class.
