AILA International Fellowship Summary

Program Overview

The Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy (AILA) is a leadership development program established by the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in 2002. It was created by David M. Abshire, cofounder of CSIS, and Kazuo Inamori, chairman emeritus of Kyocera Corporation. The program is designed to prepare future leaders for the complex challenges of strategic leadership by exploring the core elements of effective leadership. It emphasizes the intellectual and moral constraints that affect decision-making and seeks to deepen participants' understanding of leadership's impact on political, economic, and social systems.

AILA International Fellows

The AILA International Fellows program targets mid-career professionals from international, government, and non-government sectors who aim to enhance their leadership capabilities. Each year, 10 candidates are selected for a one-week training session held at CSIS in Washington, DC. The program offers a practical and immersive experience, enabling participants to improve their individual skill sets, techniques, and professional confidence in a multicultural environment. Fellows are exposed to global policy challenges and are encouraged to critically analyze the broader intellectual and cultural dimensions required for effective leadership.

Program Structure

The curriculum is dynamic and comprehensive, covering both theoretical and applied aspects of leadership. Key topics include:

• Ethics and character building
• Creativity and innovation in leadership
• Media/PR training
• Strategic thinking and trend analysis

Participants are also engaged in a variety of interactive learning activities, such as:

• Roundtable discussions with regional experts
• Lectures on topical and security issues
• Field trips to Capitol Hill, embassies, or other relevant institutions in Washington, DC
• Presentation skills training

Additionally, case studies and simulations are used throughout the program to reinforce learning and application.
