Summary of New Caledonia Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2010

Introduction

The New Caledonia Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in 2010 targeted students aged 13-15 years across grades 7 to 11. It employed a two-stage cluster sample design with a representative sample of 584 students out of 1,042 surveyed, yielding an 83.8% response rate. The survey aimed to assess tobacco use prevalence, determinants such as access, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), media, ce
ssation intentions, and school-based factors to inform comprehensive tobacco control programs.

Key Findings on Prevalence

Ever smoked cigarettes: 55.8% of students (53.6% boys, 57.4% girls).
Currently use any tobacco product: 35.2% of students (34.0% boys, 36.5% girls).
Currently smoke cigarettes: 28.7% of students (27.1% boys, 30.5% girls).
Currently use other tobacco products: 12.7% of students (14.1% boys, 11.4% girls).
Likelihood to initiate smoking: 39.4% of never smokers plan to start smoking next year.

Highlights

55.8% ever smoked cigarettes.
35.2% currently use any tobacco product.
28.7% currently smoke cigarettes.

Determinants and Attitudes

Secondhand Smoke Exposure:
- 60% lived in homes where others smoked; 70% reported exposure to smoke in public places.
- 65% believe SHS is harmful to them; 57% support banning smoking in public areas.
Access and Availability:
- 20.2% smoked cigarettes at home; 57.3% had one or more parents who smoked.
- 66.4% believe smoking should be banned in public places.
Media and Advertising:
- 68.5% were exposed to anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
- 17% had objects with cigarette brand logos; 4.5% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco company representatives.
Cessation:
- 52.2% of current users want to stop smoking; 44.6% tried to quit in the past year.
- 55.6% have received help to stop smoking.
School Factors:
- 58.9% were taught about smoking dangers in school during the past year.
- 33.4% discussed reasons for smoking with peers.
- 65.1% were educated on the effects of tobacco use.
