Afghanistan - Kabul Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary
Overview
This school-based survey (2010) assessed tobacco use and its determinants among 13-15 year-olds in Kabul, Afghanistan, using a two-stage cluster sample with high school participation rates.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: 13.0% ever smoked cigarettes (Boy 18.8%, Girl 5.1%), and 8.6% currently used any tobacco product. Specifically, 2.5% smoked cigarettes, and 7.6% used other tobacco products.
- Risk Determinants:
- 23.7% lived in homes with others smoking, and 63.1% believed secondhand smoke is harmful.
- 87.5% were exposed to anti-smoking media, while 69.3% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards.
- 12.2% had cigarette brand logos visible, and 20.6% were offered free cigarettes.
- Attitudes and Knowledge:
- 89.4% think smoking should be banned in public places; however, up to 24.3% of never smokers intend to start smoking.
- On average, students perceived smokers positively, with 47.9% thinking girls who smoke look more attractive.
- School-Based Components: 55.3% reported lessons on smoking dangers, and 41.4% discussed reasons for smoking peer-to-peer.
Methodology and Sample
Sample: Two-stage cluster design with 100% school and class response, but 81.2% student response (n=675).
