Libya 2010 Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary:
Target Population: Ages 13-15 years old students in grades 7 through 9.
Methodology: Used a two-stage cluster sample design with probability proportional to enrollment size, resulting in 2,012 participants and a 97.9% response rate.
Key Findings:
- Cigarette smoking prevalence: 13.4% of students had ever smoked, with higher rates among boys (20.2%) and lower among girls (6.6%); 4.3% were current smokers and users of other tobacco products.
- Secondhand smoke exposure: 35.7% lived in homes with others smoking, and 35.1% were exposed outside the home; 70.9% believed smoking should be banned in public places, and most understood the harms of secondhand smoke.
- Determinants of tobacco use: Access was varied, with 27.7% buying cigarettes easily; family and peer influences were present, but media helped, with 79.6% exposed to anti-smoking messages and 57.6% to pro-cigarette ads; school-based education reached 60.0% of students.
- Future risks: 28% of never smokers expected to start smoking soon.
- Overall, tobacco use was a significant issue among youth, with strong public support for control measures.
