Oman GYTS 2010 Summary: Youth Tobacco Use Among Ages 13-15
Survey Overview
- Conducted in: Oman, 2010
- Target Group: Students aged 13-15 in grades 8-10
- Methodology: Two-stage cluster sampling design, involving school selection proportional to enrollment size followed by random class selection. Overall response rate was 94.1%, with 1620 participants surveyed.

Tobacco Prevalence:
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 10.2% (Younger males: higher, 16.4%; females: 5.3%)
- Current users of any tobacco product: 3.3% (Males higher, 4.9%; females: 1.7%)
- Specific types:
- Cigarettes: 1.8% current users (males: 3.1%; females: 0.6%)
- Shisha smoking: 1.5% current users (males: 2.0%; females: 0.9%)
- Smokeless tobacco products: 1.6% current users (males: 2.5%; females: 0.9%)
- Other tobacco products: 2.2% current users (males: 3.2%; females: 1.3%)
- Likelihood of initiation: 13.2% of never smokers expected to start smoking in the next year.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 15.0% of students exposed to SHS outside their home.
- 12.8% have parents who smoke or allow smoking in their presence.
- Attitudes: 75.9% believe smoking should be banned in public places; 70.8% think SHS is harmful.

Social and Media Determinants:
- Friends' smoking: 4.2% report most or all friends smoke.
- Media and advertising: 81.5% exposed to anti-smoking media in the last 30 days; fewer had easy access to cigarette brands (10.5%) or were offered free cigarettes (7.3%).
- General knowledge: High awareness of risks, with supportive views toward smoking bans.
