Productivity Paradox Summary
The productivity paradox describes the gap between rapid technological progress and stagnant or slow productivity growth. In the UK, this issue became prominent after the Global Financial Crisis, with London maintaining higher productivity levels than other UK regions but experiencing slower growth compared to cities like New York, Paris, and Stockholm.
London's productivity varies significantly across boroughs, with central areas outperforming outer London, which has seen declines, particularly in eastern and northeastern regions. Factors hindering growth include high housing costs that limit labor mobility and human capital, inadequate public transport access exacerbating inequalities, low R&D investment relative to G7 peers, chronic underinvestment in business capital, and high income inequality affecting social mobility.
Key solutions involve a systemic approach, better coordination among government tiers, addressing data limitations, and fostering longer-term strategies to unlock productivity gains.
