Mexico-Veracruz Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
This report summarizes the Mexico-Veracruz Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), conducted in 2005 for students aged 13-15. The survey was school-based, using a two-stage cluster sampling design, with high response rates except for student participation. It aimed to assess tobacco use prevalence and key determinants for a comprehensive tobacco control program in schools.
-
Survey Highlights:
- Total participants: 1,646 students.
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 48.4% (boys 48.0%, girls 47.9%).
- Current users of any tobacco product: 22.8% (boys 24.5%, girls 20.5%).
- Current smokers: 18.1%.
- Current users of other tobacco products: 8.1%.
-
Key Determinants Assessed:
- Access/availability: 15.0% smoke at home, 28.5% buy cigarettes from stores without age refusal.
- Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS): 35.3% live in homes where others smoke; 48.2% are exposed outside the home; high awareness (88.5% think smoking should be banned in public places, 76.3% believe smoke is harmful).
- Cessation: 51.5% current smokers want to stop, 50.6% tried to quit, and 62.2% received help.
- Media/advertising: High exposure to both anti-tobacco messages (84.1%) and pro-tobacco ads (86.4% on billboards, 75.6% in media).
- School curriculum: 62.5% were taught about smoking dangers, 36.0% discussed reasons for smoking.
-
Attitudes and Knowledge:
- Perceptions: Many students view smoking negatively (e.g., 52.5% had class lessons on tobacco effects).
- SHS exposure is widespread, with nearly one-third living in smoking homes.
- Strong support for smoke-free public spaces and bans.
This data indicates high youth tobacco use and related risk factors in Veracruz, suggesting the need for targeted interventions to reduce initiation and exposure.
