Mexico-Zacatecas GYTS Summary
Survey Overview
The Mexico-Zacatecas Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2005 among 13-15 year olds in grades 1-3 using a two-stage cluster sampling design. Data represents a total of 1,037 students with response rates of 100% for schools and classes, 88% for students overall.
Key Findings
- High prevalence of tobacco use: 59.6% ever smoked cigarettes, 23.6% currently smoked cigarettes, and 25.3% used any tobacco product currently.
- Determinants: Ease of access to cigarettes (46.9% bought in stores without refusal), high exposure to secondhand smoke (43.8% lived in smoking homes, 55.2% in outside settings), and strong media influences (86.3% saw anti-smoking ads, 86.7% saw pro-cigarette billboards).
- Attitudinal factors: Students perceive smoking as socially beneficial for girls more than boys (e.g., 33.5% think girls who smoke have more friends), and majority support banning smoking in public (90% agree).
- Cessation intent: Over two-thirds (65.7%) of current smokers want to quit, with many having tried cessation methods in the past year.
Public Health Efforts
The survey highlights areas for tobacco control programs, including reducing SHS exposure, media regulation, and school education on tobacco risks.
