INN 74th Consultation Summary
Opening
- Welcome & Election: Chair Prof. Sarel Malan was elected unopposed. Dr. Clive Ondari (HPS Director) welcomed participants, announced a hybrid format, and noted a shift back to in-person meetings if COVID allows.
- Requests Processed: Over 250 requests (220 new, 19 COVID-19 related) were discussed. 240 names selected, 4 rejected, 6 deferred.
- Biosimilar Focus: Biological Qualifier (BQ) re-examined; a new concept note proposed post-management review after 2016 stalemate.
- Virtual Sessions: Virtual attendance remains optional due to accessibility.
Nomenclature Updates
- Antibodies: INN Group explores AbML, a text-based language for complex multi-specific antibodies. A tool to generate/syntax-check names is under development.
- Peptide Harmonization: INN uses
-motide, USAN uses-IMUT(for immunomodulators). No immediate common ground; USAN allows peptides + adjuvants in names, complicating INN assignment. - Viral Vector Vaccines: Debate to name vaccines differently (e.g., one-word suffixes like
-vavec) vs. re-naming gene-therapy schemes. Majority agree on a dedicated vaccine nomenclature.
Key Initiatives
- Biological Qualifier (BQ): A 4-letter code (e.g., BQxxxx) is proposed instead of full names. Bumper note drafted; feedback requested. Note: Not adopted due to past lack of member-state consensus.
- Gene Therapy: Substances use two-word INN names (e.g., ibacovtogene lomadenovec for COVID adenovirus vaccine). Originally rejected one-word requests.
- Vaccine Specificity: Suffix
-vavecproposed for viral vectors to replace generic gene-therapy nomenclature.
Collaborators & Updates
- USAN: Stem list approved/updated; 61 names/INNs adopted in 2022.
- School of INN: Courses expanded; new biennial executive programme discussions.
- Regulatory Agencies: PMDA (Japan), TGA (Australia), ANVISA (Brazil) detail recent INN contributions.
- WHO Drug Information: INN highlights message proposed.
Closing
- Chair (Malan) & Head (Balocco) thanked participants for input. Next Consultation in Oct. 2022 announced.
- Topic suggestions for future meetings encouraged.
