Key Findings
- Prevalence of Tobacco Use: Of students aged 13-15 (total n=1,807), 26.9% had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys. Current use of any tobacco product was 14.4% (boys: 17.0%; girls: 11.9%). Current cigarette smoking was 8.3%, and other tobacco products were used by 8.7%.
- Knowledge and Attitudes: 26.3% perceived smoking as increasing social connections (higher among boys). Most students (73.3%) viewed anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days, and over half saw pro-tobacco ads. Positive attitudes included high support for banning smoking in public places.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 28.9% lived in homes where others smoked, and 54.2% were exposed outside homes. Over half (54.2%) felt exposed, with 74.9% believing smoking is harmful to health.
- Access and Availability: 41.7% smoked at home, and 86% of cigarette buyers (48.9% of smokers) did not face age-based refusal at stores.
- Cessation and Media Impact: 78.2% of smokers wanted to quit, and attempts peaked among current users. Media exposure was high, with strong anti-smoking sentiment.
- School Curriculum: 50.4% were taught about smoking dangers, 34.4% discussed reasons for smoking, and 51.5% learned tobacco effects.
Methodology
- Used two-stage cluster sampling with high response rates (overall 69.7%). Collected data on determinants like price, access, family, peers, media, and cessation in 2000.
