Methodology
The survey used a two-stage cluster sample design, selecting schools and classes with proportional enrollment size. A total of 771 students aged 13-15 participated, with a 100% school and class response rate, but an 88.4% student response rate. Data collected between 2000 and 2000.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 42.5% had ever smoked cigarettes.
- 17.5% currently use any tobacco product.
- 14.3% currently smoke cigarettes.
- 5.6% use other tobacco products.
- 19.2% of never-smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year.
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure:
- 33.0% live in homes where others smoke.
- 39.5% are exposed to smoke outside the home.
- Approximately one-third of students have parental smokers.
- Knowledge and Attitudes:
- 90.5% believe smoking should be banned in public places.
- 84.2% of current smokers want to stop.
- 91.8% saw anti-smoking media in the past 30 days.
- Exposure to pro-cigarette advertising is common.
- School Factors:
- 67.1% received education on smoking dangers during the past year.
- 50.6% discussed reasons for smoking in class.
