2005 UAE GSHS (Dubai Emir Govt) Summary
The 2005 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in the UAE (Dubai Emir Govt) was a school-based study targeting students in grades 7-10, conducted between 2005 and its findings focusing on students aged 13-15 years. Using a two-stage cluster sampling design with probability proportional to enrollment, it achieved a 100% school response rate and a 92% student response rate, involving 2114 participants. Key areas assessed included unintentional injuries and violence, hygiene, dietary behaviors and overweight, physical activity, tobacco use, mental health, and protective factors. Results provided insights into behavioral patterns, with notable issues such as high rates of overweight and obesity (e.g., 38.1% total students), poor hygiene habits, mental health challenges like loneliness and suicidal ideation (e.g., 19.1% felt lonely), low physical activity, high sedentary behavior, and tobacco use, varying significantly by gender (e.g., boys had higher smoking rates than girls).
