Analysis and Summary of UAE GSHS 2005 Fact Sheet
The 2005 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in the UAE (Northern Emir Private) aimed to assess health behaviors among students in grades 7-10, focusing on unintentional injuries, violence, hygiene, dietary habits, overweight, physical activity, tobacco use, mental health, and protective factors. The survey employed a two-stage cluster sampling method with an overall response rate of 78% and a sample of 1,855 students aged 13-15 years.
Key findings indicate high rates of health issues and risky behaviors:
-
Dietary and Hygiene: A significant portion of students reported going hungry, with boys showing higher rates (11.4-12.6%) compared to girls. Overweight and obesity (35.1%) are prevalent, with boys more affected (36.6%). Poor hygiene practices were noted, such as infrequent tooth brushing (18.1%) and inadequate hand washing before eating or after using the toilet.
-
Mental Health: Loneliness (13.4%), suicidal ideation (10.5%), and lack of close friends (8.2%) were common among students, with notable gender differences, such as higher loneliness in girls and higher suicide consideration in boys.
-
Physical Activity: Insufficient physical activity (23.0%) and extensive sitting time (33.8%) were widespread, affecting both genders but with varying extents.
-
Protective Factors: Truancy was high, with boys more likely to miss classes without permission. Negative social behaviors, like schools lacking kindness and parental disengagement, were also prevalent.
-
Tobacco Use: Smoking and use of other tobacco products were significant concerns, with higher rates among boys (8.7% for smoking).
-
Unintentional Injuries and Violence: Physical attacks, bullying, and fights were common, reflecting high levels of violence, with boys reporting more fights.
The survey highlights major health risks and protective factor deficiencies in the student population.
