St. Kitts STEP Survey Summary
Overview
The STRESS (STEPS - Surveillance of Trends and Events Giving Risk of Chronic Diseases) survey was conducted in St. Kitts from October 2007 to January 2008. It targeted adults aged 25-64 years, using a stratified random sampling design. A total of 1,144,433 adults participated, with an overall response rate of 6.33%. A planned repeat survey for 2011 depends on funding availability.
Key Findings
The survey assessed chronic disease risk factors through two steps: Step 1 collected sociodemographic, behavioral, and lifestyle data; Step 2 included physical measurements.
Step 1: Behavioral and Lifestyle Data
- Tobacco Use: High smoking rates were reported, with 16.2% of males currently smoking daily (range: 12.3-20.1%), and 11.4% reporting high exposure to smoke at home or workplace.
- Alcohol Consumption: About 29.8% of adults current drinkers in the past 30 days; higher incidence among males (45.1% drank alcohol frequently).
- Diet: Most adults (97.3-99.2%) consumed less than 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
- Physical Activity: Low activity levels were common (38.3-48.5% had low activity), with medians ranging from 0 to 227 minutes of activity per day.
Step 2: Physical Measurements
- Weight and Health Metrics: Average BMI was 30.2, with 78.5-83.0% overweight or obese. Average waist circumference was 94.0 cm.
- Blood Pressure: 35.0-38.2% had elevated blood pressure (SBP ≥140 or DBP ≥90 mmHg).
- Risk Factors Summary: For adults aged 25-64 years, 0.1-0.3% had low risk (no risk factors), while 43.4-71.2% and 65.2-73.2% had high risk (at least three risk factors), showing higher risk in younger and older age groups.
The survey highlights significant risk factors for chronic diseases, with high obesity, smoking, and inactivity being major issues. Further analysis needed on a smaller sample size for some estimates.
