Slovakia Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary for Ages 13-15
Background
The Slovakia GYTS was a school-based survey conducted in 2003 among 3,639 students aged 13-15. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates (school 98.3%, class 100%, student 87.4%, overall 85.9%). The survey aimed to assess tobacco use prevalence, determinants, and school-based interventions.
Key Highlights
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: 66.5% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, and 27.3% currently used any tobacco product. Specifically, 26.4% smoked cigarettes, with 4.5% being daily smokers. Additionally, 28.8% initiated smoking before age ten.
- Risk Initiation: 24.7% of never smokers are likely to start smoking next year.
- Access and Availability: 6.9% usually smoked at home, and 54.4% bought cigarettes in stores, with some purchases not being refused due to age.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 79.5% lived in homes with others smoking, and exposure was common (85.7% in outside locations). 75.6% believed smoking should be banned in public places, and 55.1% had one or more parents who smoke. SHS exposure is widespread, with nearly 4/5 experiencing it at home.
- Cessation and Media: 81.0% of current smokers tried to quit in the past year, and a high proportion (62.9%) want to quit. Media exposure shows balanced but slight preference for pro-cigarette ads (75.0% in newspapers/magazines vs. 57.2% anti-smoking ads).
- School and Curriculum: 70.0% were taught about smoking dangers in school during the past year, but only 11.8% received cessation help.
- Demographics: Higher smoking rates among boys compared to girls in several categories, indicating gender disparities in tobacco use.
This summary based on the 2003 survey provides insights into tobacco control challenges in Slovakia, relevant for upcoming interventions.
