Serbia Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary (2003):
-
Survey Overview: The study was conducted in 2003 with a school-based design involving students aged 13-15. It used a two-stage cluster sampling method, with random selection of schools proportional to enrollment and then classes within schools. High response rates were achieved: school response rate 100%, class response rate 100%, student response rate 89.8%, and an overall total of 3,506 participants.
-
Tobacco Use Prevalence: Smoking rates are alarmingly high. Ever smoked cigarettes: 51.8%. Current users of any tobacco product: 13.5%. Current cigarette smokers: 12.8%. Daily cigarette smokers: 4.6%. Other tobacco use includes cigar smoking at 5.7% and widespread initiation under age ten at 33.5%.
-
Determinants of Tobacco Use: Multiple factors contribute to high use. Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is extensive: 97.7% of students live in homes where others smoke in their presence. Access to tobacco is easy, with 94.4% able to buy cigarettes without age refusal. Among current smokers, 54.2% want to stop, 80.5% have tried quitting in the past year, and 70.3% received help to quit. Media exposure includes 80% seeing pro-cigarette ads in newspapers or magazines, and 22% offered free cigarettes by tobacco representatives.
-
School-Related Factors: About 64.1% of students reported learning in school about the dangers of smoking in the past year, and 40.5% discussed reasons for smoking at their age, indicating some educational efforts were in place.
Overall, the survey highlights a significant youth tobacco problem in Serbia with high prevalence rates and contributing factors such as SHS exposure, easy access, and media influences.
