Zika Virus Situation Report Summary

Date: 26 May 2016
Key Transmission: As of 25 May 2016, 60 countries/territories reported mosquito-borne Zika virus transmission. Of these, 46 experienced first outbreaks since 2015 with no prior circulation, and 14 had evidence of transmission between 2007 and 2014. Additionally, four countries without ongoing transmission and ten with person-to-person transmission (often sexual) were noted.
Health Impacts:
- Microcephaly: Ten countries/territories reported cases, with maternal infection in eight countries. Brazil had the highest number of cases. Spain confirmed a case in a returning traveler.
- Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS): Increased incidence reported in 13 countries/territories, with confirmed cases; one case in the Netherlands and one under verification in Guadeloupe.
Global Spread: Zika virus has spread widely, with evidence from 2007 onward in various regions. The Asian lineage was identified in Cabo Verde, similar to Brazil's strain.
Risk Assessment: WHO maintained that global risk remains unchanged; Zika continues to spread, and vigilance is needed due to ongoing transmission and potential impacts.
Response: WHO's Strategic Response Framework includes surveillance, risk communication, vector control, and health system support. A revised strategy was being developed for July to December 2016.
