Rare earth minerals (RERs) are essential for enabling renewable energy technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles (EVs), and batteries, playing a critical role in the energy transition. Their unique magnetic, luminescent, and electrochemical properties are widely used in applications ranging from catalysts and electronics to defense systems.
The global demand for rare earths is projected to increase by 300-700% by 2040, driven by clean energy technologies. Currently, China dominates the supply chain, accounting for approximately 60% of production and 90% of rare earth processing, raising concerns about supply security and potential trade restrictions.
Key challenges include market concentration, environmental impacts (e.g., tailing ponds near Bayan Obo mine in China), and technological dependence. Advancements like externally excited synchronous motors (EESMs) aim to reduce reliance on rare earth permanent magnets while maintaining performance.
Recycling, though limited (currently supplies only 1% of EU rare earth demand), offers potential as a supplementary source for countries like Saudi Arabia pursuing a fossil fuel-independent model.
Policymakers, governments, and industry must collaborate to ensure a secure supply, promote circular economy principles, diversify supply chains, and foster technological innovation. This includes incentivizing sustainable extraction practices and supporting market growth despite potential geopolitical and environmental risks
