Indonesia - Surakarta Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary

Survey Overview: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2005 in Indonesia, focusing on students aged 13-15 in Surakarta. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design, selecting schools and classes randomly with a school response rate of 100.0%, class response rate of 100.0%, and overall student response rate of 96.0%, involving 1,642 participants. This design ensured representative data collection.

Sample and Method: The survey used probability proportional to enrollment size for initial sampling, with all eligible students in selected classes participating. Response rates were high across stages.

Key Findings on Tobacco Use:

• Ever smoked cigarettes: 42.4% (boys: 71.2%, girls: 14.0%)
• Currently use any tobacco product: 16.7% (boys: 30.5%, girls: 3.0%)
• Currently smoke cigarettes: 15.9%
• Currently use other tobacco products: 2.7% (boys: 4.4%, girls: 1.0%)

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):

• 78.0% of students live in homes where others smoke, and 90% believe smoking should be banned in public places.
• High exposure at 81.4%, with 60.3% having one or more parents who smoke; 47.2% think SHS is harmful to them.

Attitudes and Perceptions:

• 92.7% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days, while high rates (87.3%) viewed pro-cigarette ads in newspapers or magazines.
• 94.8% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards.
• Media influence is significant, with 8.9% possessing objects featuring cigarette brand logos.

School Factors and Cessation:

• 51.8% learned about smoking dangers in school during the past year; 44.5% discussed reasons for smoking with peers.
• Among current smokers: 76.0% want to stop, 91.5% attempted cessation in the past year, and 96.3% received help.

Future Initiation and Risk Factors:

• 8.9% of never smokers are likely to start smoking next year.
• High SHS exposure and parental smoking (60.3%) are major risk factors, with attitudes indicating strong pro-smoking influences in some areas.
