Introduction
The 2011 survey assessed health behaviors among students aged 13-15 in grades 2nd-4th through a school-based study in rural Algeria. It measured dietary habits, drug use, hygiene, physical activity, tobacco use, and experiences with violence or unintentional injuries.
Methodology
- Sampling design: Two-stage cluster sampling, with schools selected proportionally to enrollment.
- Response rates: 100% schools, 98% students, overall 98% participation.
- Sample size: 2215 students.

Dietary Behaviours
- Underweight: 8.3% total (12.1% boys, 4.8% girls)
- Overweight: 11.2% total (8.2% boys, 13.8% girls)
- Obese: 2.4% total (1.3% boys, 3.4% girls)
- Carbonated soft drink consumption daily: 73.1% total (69.8% boys, 76.3% girls)
Drug Use
- Marijuana lifetime use: 0.9% total (1.7% boys, 0.2% girls)
Hygiene
- Tooth cleaning less than once daily: 25.8% total (30.3% boys, 21.8% girls)
- Hand washing after toilet rarely or never: 4.9% total (6.3% boys, 3.5% girls)
Physical Activity
- At least 60 minutes daily for five or more days: 21.0% total (33.2% boys, 9.9% girls)
- PE class frequency: 26.6% total (similar between boys and girls)
- Sitting activities exceeding three hours: 23.1% total (25.5% boys, 20.9% girls)
Tobacco Use
- Cigarette smoking in past 30 days: 7.1% total (14.1% boys, 0.8% girls)
- Early first cigarette use: 78.2% among ever smokers (boys and girls similar)
- Exposure to smoking: 45.1% total (51.0% boys, 39.9% girls)
Violence and Unintentional Injury
- Physical fights in past 12 months: 47.9% total (60.6% boys, 36.3% girls)
- Serious injury in past 12 months: 34.6% total (42.2% boys, 27.6% girls)
- Bullying in past 30 days: 54.2% total (53.5% boys, 55.0% girls)
