Meningitis Weekly Bulletin Summary - Week 35-39 (June 29 - October 1, 2011)

1. Epidemiological Situation (Weeks 35-39):

   • The epidemiological situation across monitored West African countries remained relatively calm in the period leading up to October 1, 2011.
   • A total of 345 suspected meningitis cases were reported during weeks 35-39 across countries like Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Tchad, and Togo.
   • The overall case fatality rate was 8.1%. High fatality was noted in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Central Africa.
   • All reported cases were meningococcal-negative.
   • Countries are advised to review and update their epidemic preparedness and response plans, and to mobilize necessary resources for meningitis-prone regions and districts.

2. 2011 Summary (Weeks 1-39):

   • Cumulatively for the year up to week 39, 26,890 suspected meningitis cases were reported, with 2,121 deaths (7.9% CFR). Higher rates were observed in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Central Africa, and Niger.
   • Burkina Faso reported the highest number of cases.
   • Laboratory confirmation rates improved notably this year, especially in Burkina Faso.
   • Ceftriaxone is recommended for treating all confirmed meningitis cases throughout the year.

3. Laboratory Findings (Weeks 35-39):

   • There were no laboratory-confirmed meningococcal cases.
   • Burkina Faso experienced a major outbreak of Streptococcus pneumoniae, while Niger saw predominance of NmW135.
   • Streptococcus pneumoniae was mainly found in Burkina Faso, Chad, and Cameroon.
   • Countries showed considerable effort in laboratory confirmation of cases this reporting period.

4. Overall Assessment and Recommendations:

   • Both the previous week and the cumulative 2011 situation show generally low activity.
   • Continuous case management is emphasized, with Ceftriaxone now recommended universally for meningitis treatment.
   • Meningitis activity requires constant vigilance throughout the year based on past trends.
