Meningitis Weekly Bulletin Summary
I. Epidemiological Situation of Week 27-30 (05 July - 01 August 2010)
- Weekly cases reported: 275
- Deaths reported: 21 (Case Fatality Ratio: 7.6%)
- Districts experiencing alert/epidemic conditions remained static.
- Burkina Faso had 67 cases and 2 deaths; Mali had 25 cases and 5 deaths; Nigeria reported the highest number (45 cases).
- Sporadic cases were noted across several countries; microbiological confirmation is necessary for case characterization during the post-epidemic period.
II. Synthesis of the 2010 Epidemiological Situation (Weeks 1-30)
- Cumulative cases: 23,241; Deaths: 2,464 (CFR: 10.6%);
- Alert and epidemic districts remained unchanged.
- Niger and Nigeria showed the highest number of cases but lower CFRs.
III. Identified Pathogens
- For the identified weeks, strains included Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, W135, X, etc.
- The 2010 epidemic season was characterized by the resurgence of NmW135 and the emergence of NmX; mixed epidemics should be monitored carefully in 2010 and 2011.
