This is a report from the Inter-country Support Team for West Africa on cerebrospinal meningitis for the week ending June 9, 2013.

Epidemiological Situation for Week 23

• Total suspected meningitis cases: 307
• Total deaths: 21
• Case fatality rate: 6.8%
• Districts in alert: Benin had two districts on alert (Tanguieta and Materi), but no epidemic districts were declared.
• Completeness of data: Varies by country, averaging low completeness.
• Countries with cases: Included Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea, and others in West Africa. Case numbers vary by country.

Cumulative Situation (Weeks 01-23)

• Total cases reported cumulatively: 10,898
• Total deaths: 1,028
• Case fatality rate: 9.4%
• Some countries had high lethality rates, such as Cote d'Ivoire and South Sudan.

Laboratory Data

• Laboratory tests were conducted on CSF samples for 2,840 cases (about 26% of notifications).
• The most common pathogen identified was Neisseria meningitidis, particularly in the serogroup W135, followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae and other N. meningitidis strains.

Comments

• The majority of the meningitis burden was concentrated in West African countries.
• Vaccination efforts are noted in some countries, but meningitis surveillance continues.
