I. Epidemiological Situation

• Notified Countries & Data Completeness
  Across countries, reported cases ranged up to 272 (total cases). Niger had a high case-fatality ratio (66.7%).
  Lab testing completion rate was low overall (53.5%) but improving.

• Alert & Epidemic Districts
  No active epidemic or alert districts during week 26, marking the end of the 2013 epidemic season.

II. Synthesis of Overall Epidemic Situation (Jan 1–26, 2013)

• Total cases reported for the year: 12,464, with 1,131 deaths (9.1% case-fatality rate).
• Countries like Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Togo showed high attack rates and were partially/fully vaccinated against meningitis.
• Mali and Mauritania had low fatality rates (2.6% and 33.3%, respectively).

III. Laboratory Data Summary

• Pathogens Identified: Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) was the most common (51.6% of lab-confirmed cases), followed by Neisseria meningitidis W135 (29.3%).
• N. meningitidis Serogroup A (NmA) cases were rare, mostly in non-vaccinated individuals (e.g., Chad and Nigeria).
• 2,635 laboratory samples were tested (27% were CSF samples); lab capacity is being strengthened through PCR, culture equipment, and training.

IV. Comments & Conclusion

• The 2013 epidemic was less severe than prior years due to improved data completeness and consistent surveillance.
• Countries introducing MenAfriVac were urged to sustain surveillance post-campaign to monitor circulating pathogens.
• Weekly bulletins will cease in 2013 and resume monthly starting January 2014.
