Macedonia GSHS 2007/2008: Summary and Conclusions

Status Overview

Based on survey results conducted in MacTADonija, the following health issues among young people ages 13-15 to 16 are identified:

• Overweight/obesity prevalence among students: 14% at risk and 1.5% clearly overweight (boys skew higher)
• Mental Health issues: 8.6% considered suicide during the past year (highest among girls)
• Alcohol use: 39.4% students consumed alcohol, with boys at higher rate (44.2%)
• Early initiation of tobacco/alcohol use: 61.2% started alcohol before 14, 55.8% boys under 13
• Suicidal considerations and unhealthy diet habits

Main Recommendations

• Implement adolescent health improvement programs in school, family, healthcare, and community systems
• Improve nutritional awareness and physical activity training in schools
• Increase efforts to educate adolescents about mental health and achieve drug prevention
• Monitor chronic risk behaviors and coordinate adolescent health strategies between all institutions
