Avian Influenza H5N1

• As of 4 July, 522 confirmed human H5N1 cases reported, all from 15 countries.

Egypt

• Consistently reports human H5N1 cases linked to poultry contact.
• Virus declared endemic in poultry by Egypt and Indonesia.
• Information suggests endemic circulation in poultry also occurs in China, India, Viet Nam, and Bangladesh.
• Despite a decrease in some reported cases likely due to warmer weather and seasonal pattern, over 10 Nile Valley governorates continue to report poultry outbreaks.
• Probable persistence of H5N1 in poultry means continued, sporadic human cases, requiring ongoing risk reduction efforts at the human-animal interface through collaboration between animal health and public health sectors.
