Survey Overview

The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in Tanzania's Dar Es Salaam in 2008 was a school-based survey targeting students aged 13-15 years. It employed a two-stage cluster sample design to produce representative data on tobacco use prevalence and determinants within the region. The response rates were high, with 100% school and class response and an overall student response rate of 85%, involving 1,354 participants.

Key Findings

Tobacco Use Prevalence: Approximately 9.2% of students used any form of tobacco; specific rates include 2.6% current cigarette smokers (males at 12.7%, females at 0.7%) and 5.7% current users of other tobacco products (males at 6.2%, females at 4.7%).
Determinants and Exposures:
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 19.4% of students lived in homes where others smoked, and 39.4% were exposed outside the home. Overall, 81.5% believe SHS is harmful.
