Tanzania - Kilimanjaro GYTS Summary
Introduction
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Tanzania-Kilimanjaro was a school-based cross-sectional survey conducted in 2008 on students aged 13-15 (grades 6,7, form 1, form 2). It used a two-stage cluster sample design with high response rates: 100% school response, 100% class response, 85% student response, and an overall 89.6%. A total of 1,376 students participated.
Key Findings
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Any tobacco use: 10.9% (males 12.5%, females 9.3%)
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 14.1% (males 16.3%, females 11.8%)
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 3.6% (males 3.3%, females 3.8%)
- Currently use other tobacco products: 8.7% (males 10.4%, females 6.9%)
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)
- 17.6% live in homes where others smoke
- 32.3% exposed to SHS outside home
- Average parental SHS exposure rate: 11.4% have at least one parent smoker
- 8.7% of never smokers likely to initiate smoking within a year
Knowledge and Attitudes
- 90.7% believe SHS is harmful to them
- 67.8% support banning smoking in public places
- 73.5% were taught about smoking dangers in school during the past year
- 29.8% think boys smoking make more friends; 34.8% think girls smoking look more attractive
- Only 2.2% of students regularly exposed to tobacco advertising perceived it positively
Media and Advertising
- 79.8% saw anti-smoking messages in media (past 30 days)
- 46.7% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards; 49.6% saw such ads in newspapers/magazines
- 14.5% possess objects with cigarette brand logos
- 4.1% offered free cigarettes by company representatives
School-Based Initiatives
- Comprehensive tobacco education integrated into curriculum, with high student participation (85% response rate)
Overall
The survey indicates moderate youth tobacco use, significant SHS exposure, but strong support for tobacco control measures and educational efforts in place.
