GYTS Summary: UNRWA Gaza Strip 2013
Objectives: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) monitors youth tobacco use and tracks key tobacco control indicators aligned with WHO FCTC obligations, providing national and international comparable data.
Sample and Methodology: Conducted in 2013 by UNRWA in the Gaza Strip, this school-based survey targeted students aged 13-15 years (grades 7-9), with a high response rate of 95.8% and 1,714 respondents. It used a standardized global methodology with a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire, aiming for nationally representative data.
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use: Among 1,714 students, 15.4% used any tobacco product; 19.1% of boys vs. 11.0% of girls. Cigarette smoking affected 11.1% (13.7% boys, 8.1% girls), while smokeless tobacco and electronic cigarette use were reported by 4.1%. Past 12-month cessation attempts exceeded 65% among smokers.
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 51.5% of students were exposed to tobacco smoke at home; 59.6% in enclosed public places.
- Access and Availability: 40.9% of cigarette smokers bought their cigarettes from stores or vendors, with no barriers due to age for some.
- Media Exposure: Almost 50% of students noticed tobacco advertisements or promotions in points of sale, while over 70% saw anti-tobacco messages in media.
- Knowledge and Attitudes: 70.7% of students viewed tobacco smoking as harmful to others, with 72.2% favoring its ban in enclosed public places. Most students (e.g., 70.7%) supported restrictions.
The survey underscores high tobacco use prevalence among youth in the Gaza Strip, with significant exposure to secondhand smoke and media influences.
