Global Youth Tobacco Survey: Gaza Strip 2013 Overview

Survey Objectives: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) monitors youth tobacco use and tracks key tobacco control indicators, aiding countries in fulfilling WHO FCTC obligations. In Gaza Strip 2013, it was conducted by the Palestinian Ministry of Health with a 94.3% response rate among 13-15-year-old students in grades 7-10.

Key Data Summary:

• Tobacco Use: 17.3% of students (23.6% boys, 11.0% girls) currently used tobacco; 6.5% smoked cigarettes (9.7% boys, 3.5% girls); 5.6% used smokeless tobacco (7.9% boys, 3.2% girls).
• Cessation Trends: 52.3% of smokers tried to quit in the past 12 months; 62.3% wanted to stop immediately.
• Secondhand Smoke Exposure: 35.5% exposed in homes, 47.2% in enclosed public places.
• Access and Availability: 42.2% bought cigarettes from stores; high cigarette sales volumes noted.
• Media Exposure: 68.1% saw anti-tobacco messages, 71.9% noticed tobacco advertising; 81.0% favored public smoking bans inside enclosed areas.
• Attitudes and Knowledge: 67.0% recognize tobacco harm, 81.0% support indoor bans; low susceptibility to tobacco use among youth.
• Overall Findings: High youth tobacco exposure, limited cessation support, and strong policy support for tobacco control; data weighted for national representativeness.

This survey highlights significant tobacco use disparities by gender and age, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
