2024 American Instructional Resources Surveys (AIRS) Summary

Core Content and Purpose

The 2024 American Instructional Resources Surveys (AIRS) were conducted by the RAND Corporation in spring 2024 to gather data on the usage, perceptions, and supports for instructional materials in K-12 public school classrooms across the United States. The surveys were administered to principals and teachers through the American Educator Panels (AEP), which includes the American Teacher Panel (ATP) and American School Leader Panel (ASLP). The results aim to inform policy and education practice related to instructional resources, particularly in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.

Key Features of the Survey

Survey Focus: The surveys explored teacher and principal perspectives on instructional materials and related supports, including professional learning, school and district culture, benchmark assessments, and AI in instruction.
Sample Size and Composition:
- ATP: Targeted 8,700 complete responses, including 400 per oversampled state and 1,500 across others.
- ASLP: Targeted 1,500 completed surveys from a national sample of school leaders.
Sampling and Oversampling:
- The ATP sampled teachers from 18 states: 14 participating in the IMPD Network and 4 of interest to funders.
- The ASLP sampled principals from all grade levels.
Survey Administration:
- The ATP survey was completed online between April 24 and June 4, 2024, taking about 20 minutes.
- The ASLP survey was completed online between April 10 and May 13, 2024, also taking about 20 minutes.
Weighting and Calibration:
- The survey included calibrated weights to ensure the sample reflects the national population of teachers and principals, as well as state-specific populations in oversampled states.
- Weights were calculated using a three-step process: sampling frame calibration, sample selection, and response probability.
- A trimming process was applied to reduce extreme weights and maintain population totals.

Survey Completion Rates

ATP Completion Rate: 55.4% (based on weighted cases).
ASLP Completion Rate: 30.7% (based on weighted cases).
These rates were calculated after removing ineligible or screened-out respondents.
