Ukraine 2011 Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
Survey Overview
- Year: 2011
- Target Age Group: Ages 13-15 years (Grades 7-9), representing about 3.5 million adolescents nationwide.
- Methodology:
- Two-stage cluster sample design based on school enrollment size.
- A random selection of classes from selected schools.
- Sample Size: 3,550 survey respondents out of 3,762 invited.
- Goal: Measure tobacco prevalence, usage trends, and determinants (access, price, exposure, cessation, media, school curriculum) to inform Ukraine's tobacco control programs.
- Key Determinant Foundings:
- High current tobacco product use (19.3%).
- Significant exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS) (22.2% live in homes where others smoke).
- Students hold strong negative views about the harm of others' smoke and desire public smoking bans.
- Media exposure both for pro- and anti-tobacco messages is high. Anti-smoking messages are prominent.
- Education about tobacco in school is reported by a majority.

Tobacco Prevalence
- Ever Smoked Cigarettes: 48.5% (Boys 53.9%, Girls 42.8%)
- Current Tobacco Use: 19.3% overall (Higher among Boys 22.6%, Girls 15.7%)
- Current Cigarette Smoking: 16.6% (Boys 18.7%, Girls 14.4%)
- Daily Cigarette Smoking: 4.4% (Boys 5.0%, Girls 3.7%)
- Cigars: 7.2% (Boys 8.0%, Girls 6.3%)
- Current Cigarette Smoking: 16.6% (Boys 18.7%, Girls 14.4%)
- Early Initiation: 28.3% started any tobacco use before age ten (Boys 36.8%, Girls 17.3%).
- Intentions: 55.3% of never smokers were likely to start smoking in the next year.
- Evenness Factors: Direct purchasing evidence, but also note free offers exposure to tobacco promotion.
Secondhand Smoke Exposure & Perception
- SHS Exposure: Nearly a quarter (22.2%) live in homes where others smoke.
- Half (50.0%) live with at least one parent who smokes.
- 16.8% have most or all friends who smoke.
- 57.2% are exposed to smoke outside the home.
- Attitudes toward SHS:
- 72.6% believe secondhand smoke is harmful.
- 86.6% support banning smoking in public places.
- 75.7% believe secondhand smoke harms them.
Cessation Awareness
- Among current smokers:
- 70.9% want to stop smoking.
- 79.9% attempted to quit in the past year.
- 80.1% have received help to quit.
Media and Advertising Exposure & Perception
- Media messages are highly visible.
- Anti-messages: 76.6% saw anti-tobacco ads on TV, 61.4% on billboards, 53.8% in newspapers/magazines.
- Pro-messages: 62.1% saw pro-cigarette ads on TV, 66.6% on billboards, 57.7% in newspapers/magazines.
- 19.2% had items (e.g., pens, clothing) with a cigarette brand logo.
- 7.6% were offered free cigarettes by a tobacco company representative.
- 86.6% support public smoking bans largely due to concerns about health effects.
School-Based Education & Discussions
- Over three quarters (75.7%) report having been taught about tobacco dangers in school.
- Over three quarters (70.9%) report discussing why their age group should not smoke.
- Most (82.6%) report being taught the effects of tobacco use.
