Zambia Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2011 Summary

This report summarizes the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in Zambia in 2011, focusing on youth aged 13 to 15 years. The study used a two-stage cluster sampling design to survey students from grades 7, 8, and 9, with a total sample of 3,377 students, of which 1,964 participated. The overall response rate was 55.7%, and data were not weighted due to this rate.

Key findings highlight high tobacco use among youth:

• 19.3% had ever smoked cigarettes, with boys (20.2%) higher than girls (17.7%).
• 25.6% currently use any tobacco product, and 6.2% smoke cigarettes regularly.
• 22.5% of never-smokers are likely to start smoking in the next year.
• Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) was high, with 30.2% living in homes where others smoke, and 40.8% exposed in enclosed public places.
• Attitudes indicate that 56.4% support banning smoking in public, while 55.0% of current smokers have tried to quit.
• Media influence is mixed, with 72.9% seeing anti-smoking messages and 57.5% exposed to pro-tobacco ads.

School-based interventions are partially effective, with 61.6% taught about smoking dangers, but efforts to discuss age-specific reasons for smoking could be improved. These data can inform comprehensive tobacco control programs.
