报告摘要
Ecuador - Quito GYTS Summary
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in Quito between 2001 and 2001 focused on ages 13-15, using a two-stage cluster sampling design to assess tobacco use among students. Key findings include:
-
Survey Design and Response: 1,672 students participated with a high response rate of 96.3%, providing representative data for Quito.
-
Prevalence of Tobacco Use: About 25.1% of students currently use any tobacco product, with cigarette smoking at 20.5%. Ever smoking cigarettes was 58.5%. Early initiation is high, with 21.3% of never smokers likely to start next year.
-
Determinants: Factors such as access to cigarettes (57.1% bought them in stores, often without issue due to age, but 65.9% did not face refusal) and secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure were prevalent. SHS exposure was high: 36.1% lived in homes with smoking, and 56.9% were exposed elsewhere. Knowledge includes awareness of smoking harms, with 80.1% supporting bans in public places.
-
Media, Advertising, and Attitudes: Students saw both anti-smoking (82.3%) and pro-tobacco media (e.g., billboards: 83.6%, newspapers: 77.1%), and some believed smoking enhanced social life (e.g., more friends). Over four-fifths saw anti-smoking ads, and school discussions on tobacco dangers occurred for 45.0%.
This survey underscores high youth tobacco use, exposure to SHS, and media influence, suggesting the need for comprehensive tobacco control programs in Ecuador.
