Summary: Human Infections with Avian Influenza H5N1 as of 2 April 2012

• Total Human Cases: 600 laboratory-confirmed cases reported to WHO between 2003 and 2 April 2012, with 353 fatalities from 15 countries. Since January 2012, 22 cases were added.
• Recent Cases (5–2 April 2012): Six new cases reported, two from Indonesia, three from Egypt, and one from Vietnam, all sporadic and linked to exposure to sick or dead poultry.
• Animal Health and Epidemiology: H5N1 viruses circulate endemically in poultry in China, Egypt, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Bangladesh, India, and sporadically in Cambodia. The epidemiological curve shows seasonal patterns, with increased human cases in winter, declining in summer, correlating with bird outbreaks.
• Case Details: All recent cases were isolated, with no sustained human-to-human transmission observed, and supported by exposure history.
• Public Health Assessment: Poultry outbreaks and sporadic human cases are expected based on seasonal trends, but no additional concerns for sustained human-to-human spread are raised.
